About This Site

This site of Hong Kong Media Education Project provides media literacy literature, curriculum resources and website links for media teachers and researchers with the aim of promoting media education movement inHong Kongand Greater China. In recent years, media education has been gaining momentum inHong Kong. More and more school students are engaging in the activities of media literacy programs and campus TV. The site also serves for students who are taking Liberal Studies courses in local secondary schools.

This site is constructed by Dr. Alice Y. L. Lee at the Department of Journalism at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). It originated from the research project “The Quest for Infomedia Literacy: A Study of the Hong Kong Education Sector’s Response to Change in Communication Technology” in 1999. Therefore, it has a particular concern with the relationship between technology development and media education.

Media education has to keep pace with social and technological changes. The 21st century has rapidly become an age of the Internet and multimedia. When information technology converges with communication technology, it is necessary for media education to extend its scope to cover all the new media (infomedia technologies). The concept of “media literacy” should also evolve to become “infomedia literacy” (also coined by UNESCO as “Media and Information Literacy”), which promotes the critical analysis of all information, images and values through media and information technologies. Therefore, this site includes reference materials on both traditional media and new media in the Web 2.0 era.

This site is currently under the Institute for Journalism and Society at the Schoolof Communication, HKBU. The site is renovated in 2012 by the School’s working team for the Media Literacy in the 21st Century Project. Starting from 2012, theSchool ofCommunication will offer to HKBU students a university-wide General Education course entitled “Media Studies in the 21st Century”. Students who take this GE course will get their curriculum reference here.
